412 MILLENNIUM A s a college English instructor, Mary Louise StanleyWeinkauf did more than simply introduce her students to classic literature penned by brilliant authors long ago. In fact, she encouraged them to become better writers themselves, teaching critical thinking and communication skills relevant to a number of professions. A former graduate assistant and instructor at the University of Tennessee, she was also an assistant professor of English at Adrian College, head of the English department at DakotaWesleyan University, and an instructor at Columbia College. Outside of the classroom, Ms. Weinkauf has been a dedicated community servant for many years, acting as pastor of Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church and Siloa Lutheran Church, as well as others in White Pine, Mich., and Gowrie, Iowa. From 2006 to 2013, she was director of the Lay School for Mission’s Sayner campus, where she contributed to the spiritual development of people preparing to engage in greater ministry within their congregations. Ever committed to fulfilling her civic duty, Ms. Weinkauf served on the board of directors for the Ontonagon County chapter of Habitat for Humanity from 1995 to 1997 and was affiliated with the Lutheran Campus Ministry for Wisconsin and Upper Michigan from 1996 to 2002. Other organizations with which she has been involved include the Lakeland Area Food Pantry, the Pastime Club Adult Day Care Center, and the Northern Great Lakes Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Ms. Weinkauf, a member of the American Association of University Women, has served as vice president and was division president from 1978 to 1980. She has been affiliated with the National Council of Teachers of English, the South Dakota Council of Teachers of English, the Science Fiction Research Association, and Delta Kappa Gamma, for which she was state president, state vice president, and president of her local chapter.
