397 A Marquis Who's Who Magazine B acked by five decades of professional experience, Suzanne Anne Vlamis has utilized her creative prowess to become the prominent editor and photographer she is today. With a focus in portraits, architecture, aerials, landscapes and wildlife, Ms. Vlamis documents New York and other exotic places of the world through her camera lens. To prepare for her career, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Long Island University in 1966. She later completed an intensive film summer workshop at New York University in 1989. In 1967 she began her career as a freelance photographer serving in that position for five years before becoming a copy assistant to the features editor at BRIDE’s Magazine. Through the experience she gained in that position she took on the role of editorial assistant at Victor Riesel- Labor Columnist in 1969. After leaving that position, she began working for The Associated Press as the first full-time female staff photographer. While in that position she originated many story ideas, including “The Restoration of the Statue of Liberty” over a three-year period, “The Centennial Restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral,” “Building Equitable Tower” and “Huck Finn in Gotham.” She was promoted to supervising news features photo editor in 1985. While in that role she directed photographers around the world on feature stories providing creative direction and motivation. She also assisted the curator of The Photo Library and the directors of the electronic AP Photo Archive. Currently, she serves as the news photo editor of special projects, a position she has held since 1998. Ms. Vlamis remains a member of the New York Press Photographers Association, the American Film Institute, the Ocean Conservancy, the Cousteau Society, the World Wild Life Foundation, the Audubon Society, the George Eastman House New York City Collector Club and the Sierra Club.
