50 MILLENNIUM D r. Martin Benson is a certified mechanical engineer, educator and researcher with over 50 years of experience in his field. Dr. Benson received a Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Sydney and a Master of Engineering from the University of Wollongong. During the course of receiving both degrees, he began his career as a professional engineer for John Lysaght and Co. from 1959 to 1978. Wanting to impart his knowledge to others and help future engineers accomplish their goals, he became a lecturer, department head and chairman of board studies at Lae Technical College, serving there from 1978 to 1984. He later became a lecturer and senior lecturer at The Papua New Guinea University of Technology, acting as such from 1985 to 1989 and obtaining a PhD in flammability and related phenomena from the institution in 1996. During his employment in the steel industry, Dr. Benson was involved in the design and construction of a continuous-strip paint line. His major contribution was in the area of the coater room, where the solvent-air mixture had to be maintained above the higher flammability limit. This had to be carefully monitored for a safe operation. In order to meet Environmental Protection Agency requirements, fuel then had to be added to the solvent- air mixture leaving the coater room so that it could be properly incinerated. This fuel added significantly to the cost of the overall operation, so Dr. Benson made a proposal to operate the coater room in such a way that the solvent-air mixture was below the lower flammability limit and took out a patent for this procedure. Dr. Benson has maintained a fruitful career through his hard work and dedication. He has received accolades and honors for his contributions to the field, such as being selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in the World. Dr. Benson attributes his success to his passion for science, hard work and tenacity. Martin Benson, PhD Mechanical Engineer, Educator Researcher Queensland, Australia
