James Russell Couch Jr. – a pronounced physician, educator and neurologist – currently serves as a professor of neurology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Previously serving the university as chairman of the Department of Neurology, he previously held myriad roles with the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and the University of Kansas Medical Center. Likewise, he spent significant time with the Memorial Health System as director of the EEG Laboratory the Muscular Dystrophy Clinic, having also been a consultant of speech and hearing from 1979 to 1992. Earlier in his career, he was a staff member of the Presbyterian Hospital of Oklahoma City, the Kansas City General Hospital, Atchison Hospital, St. Joseph’s Medical Center and the Oklahoma City VA Hospital. Drawing upon a Bachelor of Science in zoology fromTexas A&MUniversity and MD and PhD in physiology from Baylor University, Dr. Couch is certified in headache medicine and is a diplomate in clinical neurophysiology and clinical neurophysiology. He is licensed to practice medicine in Oklahoma, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri and Texas. Contributing more than 100 scientific articles to professional journals, he has also presented papers to both national and international meetings. Since 2003, he has been a section editor of “Headache Current Treatment Options in Neurology,” and was a former editorial board member of the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Disease and the Headache Journal. Among the notable highlights of his career, Dr. Couch is proudest of being one of the first individuals to record the embryonic heart at 10 days and the first to record neurons in raphe nuclei. Starting multiple new programs at various universities, he also contributed to the development of the American Headache Society and helped the society gain national recognition. A past chief of neurology at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, he created the neurology department and rebuilt their residency program. Dr. Couch is a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, American Neurological Association and the American Headache Society. He has been honored with a number of awards from the National Institute of Health.
